Horse Routine Check

The routine of any stable will vary to suit individual requirements and to fit in with the program demanded by the purpose for which the horses are kept. Nevertheless, there are set tasks that must be carried out every day to ensure the well-being of the horses, which is the purpose of all stable management.

On hunting, the routine will change but horses, being creatures of habit, do best when kept on a regular routine. The following is a suggested program that covers the essential daily duties but can be adjusted to suit individual situations.

7.00 am – Fit the head collar and tie the horse up.
Check him over to see that he is well and has not sustained any injuries during the night.
Adjust the rugs.
Clean and refill the water bucket.
Muck out.
Pick out the feet.
Quarter.
Remove the head collar.
Feed.

9.00 am – Put on the head collar and tie the horse up.
Remove the droppings.
Remove rugs and saddle up.

9.00 am – Exercise.
On return from exercise, remove the saddle and bridle and put on the head collar, pick out the feet, water, and allow the horse to roll.
Rug up.
Give first hay net.
Remove the head collar.

11.30 am – Put on the head collar and tie him up.
Remove the droppings. Give thorough grooming. Put on day rugs.
Check the water bucket. Remove the head collar. Give a second feed.
Tidy the stable yard.

2.00 pm – Remove the droppings.
Fill the water bucket. Give a second hay net. Clean tack, head collar, etc.

5.00 pm – Put on his head collar and tie him up.
Remove the droppings.
Pick out the feet.
Shake up the bedding and add fresh straws as required.
Change from day rugs to night rugs.
Fill the water bucket.
Give a third feed.
Remove the head collar.

9.00 pm – Remove the droppings.
Fill the water bucket.
Shake up the bedding.
Check the rugs.
Put in the final, and largest, hay net.
